Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was announced as Mo Babouli. He played as a forward taking the place of the injured Jozy Altidore.
Attendance was announced as 26252 although I didn't hear it. There'd been a time change so it wouldn't conflict with the Toronto Raptors playoff basketball game which would kill them in the ratings. Since MLSE owns both teams, it was easy to give agreement to change the times.
On today's ticket was Jozy Altidore who has a hamstring injury and will miss six to eight weeks. Over the years there's been a jinx that about 20% of the players are traded before their ticket came up. One year they changed the tickets to pictures of fans. Recently they've been concentrating on almost untradeable Designated players.
TFC has only earned two points of the last possible nine this week with three home games in eight days. Today they miss a chance to move into a tie for first place with Philadelphia who won last night (not knowing a time of writing how Saturday games went).
Mo Babouli and Jay Chapman were starters again today. Chapman was removed at halftime for Jonathan Osorio who did play better. Babouli missed somw clear chances but did give a mermorable pass to Giovinco who fired wide from ten yards.
The TFC backline made some errant passes putting themselves under greater pressure. Crew players were mostly one last man away from a breakaway.
Crew goalie Steve Clark had less to do but made some imporatant saves and had TFC players fire off target.
Crew Ola Kamara (no relation to recently traded Crew forward Kei Kamara) had some good chances but couldn't score like Kei who last year tied Giovinco for most goals. Kei Kamara and Federico Higuain argued two weeks ago about who would take a Penalty kick which highlighted some deeper dissention on the team. Kei ended up being traded to New England for a combination of salary cap money and the future and Crew may not make a move until the trade window reopens in July.
Today was the best time for TFC to pounce. They play the Crew again Wednesday July 13th in Columbus and then again Saturday July 31st in Toronto. No mention was made today about the Trillium Cup (named after the provincial/ state flower of both places) played between these two teams.
This was only referee Nima Sagafi's third MLS game. He let a lot of stuff go minimizing stoppages with less freekick calls and giving freekicks instead of Yellow cards. The gutsiest was not awarded Sebastian Giovinco an injury time Penalty kick.
A tie was a fair result for this game. 1-1 or 2-2 would also have been acceptable. It is probably more important to earn the shutout to restore confidence in their defence which allowed four goalos against last Saturday.
Giovinco had some clear chances but had goalie Steve Clark save or he shot off target. His passes to other TFC players were often wasted.
TFC have still not lost to an Eastern team this season. If their record against Western teams was better than 1 win, 4 losses they'd be in first place.
The first 10000 fans were given a Sebastian Giovinco t-shirt. This year it had a picture of him on it instead of just a cartoon 'Atomic Ant'.
