Toronto Skillz took home their first league win of the season on Monday night
after defeating Sanjaxx Lions 3-0 at Birchmount Stadium.

"It feels good, it's the monkey off the back right," said Toronto Skillz
head coach, Leslie "Tiger" Fitzpatrick. "We looked at Sanjaxx and felt that
we could get at them with some of the tools we had, particularly down
the flanks."

"We were rewarded and got the ball in the back of the net, and we really
emphasized keeping the heads up at all times, working on the teamwork
elements, and giving some of our youngsters time as well once we knew
we had the match in hand. The whole plan paid off."

Liam Cox (7') opened the scoring, before teammate Mitchell Wong (22')
added one just past the twenty minute mark. Sanjaxx pulled one back
through Hilliard Serrao (37') just before the half, but Skillz rallied
and found the insurance marker from Michael Jahshan (69') mid-way
through the second half.

"We talked today about our finishing in the team meeting," said Fitzpatrick.
"Looking back at previous matches, we have created plenty of chances
but we just didn't put them away. Today we wanted to try and get multiple
goals in the back of the net and see if we could build from this win."

"You could see the way we responded today to giving up a goal to another
mental error, the belief was there that we could go on and win the game
and I think we can use that to propel us forward into the rest
of the season."

Sanjaxx head coach Peter Mellon was unhappy with the efforts of his squad,
and was frank with them in the post-match discussion.

"It was a message to the team that we underperformed tonight," he said.
"I reminded them of the Durham game, and how I thought we were unlucky
not to win that one, but today we just didn't show up to play."

"That is the most frustrating part of coaching this team
- the inconsistency - and I just let them know it wasn't good enough."

Toronto Skillz plays again on July 18 (8 p.m.) at Birchmount Stadium
against Toronto FC Academy.

Sanjaxx Lions play again on July 9 (7 p.m.) against Woodbridge Strikers
at Monarch Park, Toronto.
