Kingston Clippers had a memorable victory in L1 Cup first round action Thursday night,
putting Toronto FC Academy out of the competition following a 3-1 final.

Clippers came out the gates flying and deposited all three markers in just over thirty
minutes, leaving the Junior Reds with a mountain to climb to get back into the match.

Kingston demonstrated the same level of work rate, defensive organization, and attacking
chemistry that has characterized their successful play in the still young 2016 season,
leaving the TFC Academy boys with little room to work their passing combinations.
Errors in possession were chewed up quickly by the Clippers, and promptly turned
into counters.

Eric Koskins (12') was the first to benefit from the Clippers pressure, finishing
off a corner from Julian Piccioli at the back post. Midfield colleague Joey Pineo (25')
scored a carbon copy of the set-piece goal just over ten minutes later, Piccioli
again providing the supply.

Easily the goal of the night though belonged to central forward Patrick Van Belleghem (35'),
who got on the end of through ball deep into the Toronto half, turned inside on his
right foot, and hit a laser directly into the top far corner.

Toronto FC Academy began to press the point further in the second half, forcing some
good saves from Kingston GK Kemp, and managed to get one back late on. Central forward
Ethan Beckford (77') swivelled, stretched and smacked a bicycle kick finish
from 15 yards out to get a consolation for the visitors.

Kingston Clippers will now face the L1 Cup defending champions,
Woodbridge Strikers, in the second round at a date, location TBD.
