Toronto Own Goal Seals Victory for STL FC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Saint Louis FC wrapped up its two-game Canada roadtrip Saturday night, grabbing
a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC II at Ontario Soccer Centre.
STL FC improves to 5-7-6 (21 pts.) on the season, while Toronto falls to 3-8-3 (12 pts.).
"In the first half, we were very good in the front half of the field. We dictated the tempo
of the game and created quality chances," Head Coach Dale Schilly said. "In the second half,
we stayed very organized and defended really well. It was a well earned three points."
STL FC largely controlled possession throughout the first half. A big opportunity came early
on when defender Nick Bibbs split a pair of defenders to find Mike Ambersley whose one touch
deflected off of Toronto goalkeeper Quillan Roberts and nearly trickled into the net before
defender Skylar Thomas raced back to prevent the early goal.
Saint Louis was, however, able to capitalize in the 39th minute with help from Bibbs. Bibbs
first beat his defender before sending a low cross into the box in search of midfielder
Charles Renken, but Toronto's Marcus Godinho stepped up and deflected the pass into the net.
Toronto's own-goal put STL FC up 1-0 going into halftime, which Saint Louis was able
to maintain throughout the rest of the game.
In goal, Alec Kann made five saves to earn his third shutout of the season.
"Our leaders really stepped up tonight," Schilly added. "They have been taking a more
prominent role over the last few weeks, and tonight they showed the younger players how
we were going to win."
Saint Louis FC will return home on Saturday, July 25 to host Oklahoma City Energy FC
at World Wide Technology Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
