TFC clinch their first playoff berth in their nine year history. As soon as the final whistle sounded a video started playing with season hilights to the Etta James song "At Last".
Attendance was announced as 18143 on this cold and windy night which would kill the walk up crowd and it got colder as the night wore on. The weather may not have been the main reason for the no-shows as the baseball Blue Jays were playing the fifth and deciding game in their playoff series. Huge cheers went up at times where nothing important was going on at this game. Bule Jays hit a home run to take the lead and then again when they won. I suspect TFC coverage in tomorrow's papers will be minimal because of blanket baseball coverage. Them grabbing all the headlines will continue until they're knocked out. On the subway home it had been two hours since their game ended but there were still baseball fans getting on.
Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was named as Herculez Gomez. He hasn't had much playing time since the team acquired him but he did score their opening goal--his first for the team.
TFC continues their home stand with four wins in a row but their first against a 'good' team in this run--the first place Red Bulls. NYRB had clinched a playoff spot a few weeks ago--they were the first team in the entire league to qualify--but they are still playing for the Supporters' Shield for finishing first overall and win home field advantage throughout the playoffs including the championship game.
TFC limited NYRB to very few chances and tied up Bradley Wright-Phillips often double marking as he was the only NYRB forward. I didn't see them work successfully at a high field press which they've become known for this season. Shaun Wright-Phillips scored his first goal of the season tonight to compare with brother Bradley's 15 so far.
TFC had almost all the first half chances but their second liners certainly showed a lower finishing quality than the designated players. TFC were supposed to be without their three DPs as announced earlier in the week. Later we heard Michael Bradley left the US National team after their loss to Mexico and would be back for tonight's game but he wasn't even on the bench. Bradley was on the cover of today's game program. The first surprise was Jozy Altidore listed as a sub after playing in the US vs Costa Rica game in New York City last night--a 1-0 loss. He was Red carded at 32 minutes for something he said while on the bench! He not only didn't get to play but now he'll miss Saturday's game here against Columbus Crew. The second surprise was Sebastian Giovinco was here on the bench after playing yesterday in Italy's Euro Qualifier, a 2-1 victory against Norway and had to make a trans Atlantic flight to be here late in the afternoon. He entered the game at 70 minutes and scored 7 minutes later on a play that even I would say will be 'MLS Goal of the Week'. He replaced Herculez Gomez who's had very limited playing time since joining the team in August. Gomez scored the opening goal at 50 minutes.
The crowd gave a huge cheer for Giovinco when he finished warming up and we knew he'd be coming in. The cheers were louder than the applause for Gomez when he left.
It was a very rough game tonight with a lot of bumping and injuries on both teams.
TFC clinches a playoff spot for the first time in their nine year history. They only needed a tie to guarantee a post season spot or Orlando City not to win out but TFC has their eye on climbing the standings to at least fourth so they can host a playoff game. They could mathematically finish first but even second would give them a bye from the play-in games. Tonight's result pulls them into second from fifth--one point ahead of DC United and two ahead of New England and Columbus with all four of those teams having two games to go.
TFC shows they can get by without their best players for at least the first half. They can be competitive with any team on any given night. This winning momentum could be very important in the playoffs.
