Attendance was announced as 30029 on this warm evening.
Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was announced as defender Justin Morrow. Did they really have to pick one when the team lost? The star of the game I'd say was Josh Saunders the NYCFC goalie even though David Villa scored both goals--one on a Penalty.
This was a very rough game with lots of knockdowns. Eight Yellow cards (three to TFC) and lots of freekicks awarded for fouls.
NYCFC goalie Josh Saunders had to be brilliant on a few first half chances, then got more help in the second half. Defenders made some key blocks and headed away a lot of dangerous chances.
TFC Sebastian Giovinco was muscled off the ball and sometimes triple teamed to knock him off his game. He didn't win evey call when he was knocked over. He grew frustrated and drew a Yellow card for retaliation. Will the other MLS teams in the league be able to adjust or did this referee have a different style than the other referee's in the league?
TFC Jozy Altidore replaced Luke Moore at 57 minutes but so soon after the NYCFC second goal it must have been planned beforehand. Moore did have a few good chances and made some key passes in the first half. It was expected that Altidore is still not completely recovered from his hamstring injury.
Jordan Hamilton, Chris Mannella, and Manny Aparicio weren't on the bench. With TFC II having another break in their schedule, they played in the DeRo testimonial game to make up the numbers when the old guys in that game got tired.
TFC had a break with no games since two weeks ago while NYCFC played last weekend and a US Open Cup game that went 120 minutes and was finally settled by Penalty kicks. The NASL league team New York Cosmos won that game Wednesday night. I read the only regular that didn't play in that game was David Villa.
This game was somewhat like the home opener against Houston (although today's game TFC didn't play in their own half the whole first half).
TFC fails to set a team record of four wins in a row. This is the third time in their nine year history they have been stopped. This is the first time NYCFC has ever won three games in a row in this only their inaugral year. Tow of those wins have been on the road. NYCFC has been in last place since the second week of the season. They've only won four game. This game should slingshot them up three places and tie them with two other teams.
Frank Lampard arrives next month from England to play for NYCFC. He was supposed to arrive in the MLS back in January in time for the beginning of the season but instead finished off the season in the Premier League in England. Lampard is a Manchester City product who was loaned to Chelsea for half a year and ended up staying the entire season. If Sebastian Giovinco had arrived when initially expected, he'd be one of those players who arrive next month. Where would TFC be without all his goals and assists?
NYCFC is partially owned by the owners of Manchester City, a team that came over to North America to play TFC last month but not their own affiliate.
