Woodbridge Strikers won their local derby 2-0 over rivals Vaughan Azzurri, and in doing so moved firmly
into fourth place. Christian Cavallini (51') opened the scoring just after the half-time interval, and
Victor Munoz (90') closed it out at the end of regular time.

"I thought this was a well deserved win against a young Vaughan team," said Woodbridge head coach,
Peter Pinizzotto.

"I thought Vaughan played good defence in the first half, they were very compact by having nine players
behind the ball, which forced us to turn the ball away in the attacking third. I thought we did a better
job in the second half, using our speed and creating a lot more scoring opportunities."

It took until the second half for Strikers to break a determined and well-organized Vaughan defence,
and it was a set piece that finally brought the breakthrough.

"I believe the turning point in the game was the first goal in the second half by Chris Cavallini
on a great shot from a free kick," said Pinizzotto.

"I thought we did a better job in the second half using our speed and started creating a lot more
scoring opportunities. I thought our decisions and speed of play was much better in the second half,
as well the intensity was also better."

Strikers have had the stingiest defensive record in the 2015 season with only 12 goals against
in 16 matches, just edging out Oakville Blue Devils with only 13 goals in 18 matches.

In this matchweek 19 contest vs. Vaughan, the Strikers once again built on the safe hands of keeper
Matt George, and the fluent understanding of their back four.

"Defensively we played very well," agreed Pinizzotto, "and Matt did a great job on handling many
crosses in the box."

With two and three matches in hand on their opponents in higher standing, Woodbridge's end-of-season
form will do much to dictate the path of the League1 championship final leg.

Woodbridge Strikers will be back on the pitch on Sunday September 13, playing home at Vaughan Grove,
Woodbridge vs. Sanjaxx Lions - 7 p.m. kickoff.

Vaughan Azzurri - currently in second place with 39 points from 19 matches (seven points behind
Oakville, which has a game in hand on the Azzurri) - plays Saturday September 12 at Hershey Centre,
Mississauga, vs. fifth place Sigma F.C., 8 p.m. kickoff.
