July 19, 2015 League 1 Ontario Cup--Woodbridge Strikers vs Windsor Stars (from League 1 Ontario press release)
Woodbridge Strikers 2 - Windsor Stars 1 . Tue Jul 21 Written By: Staff, League1 Woodbridge Strikers moves on to the semi-finals of the 2015 men's L1 Cup after a 2-1 victory over visitors Windsor Stars. Mikateko Zwane (17') and Mikhail Farquharson (75') finished for Strikers, while Stephen Ademolu (28') struck for the Stars. Our biggest challenge was breaking down their very well structured defence," said Shane Topalovic. "They set up well and worked very well together to close down space and give us very little time on the ball. I would say the key moment was Woodbridge's second goal. We seemed to lack any energy after that and couldn't find a spark to pick up any intensity." Woodbridge will be happy to get the result, but came out the gates flat and head coach Peter Pinizotto felt the Strikers were somewhat fortunate to come away with the result. "I thought we started very slow and give a few balls away in the first twenty minutes, but Windsor could not take advantage of our mistakes," he said. "I thought once again our defence played very well, also great to see two call ups from our reserve team scoring a goal each." "In the second half we started to play with more intensity, and we were able to creat more scoring chances, but could not finish on our chances," he added. "We were able to score with about fifteen minutes left to get the win in a very difficult match, but we are happy with the end result and to advance to the next round." Both head coaches chose the Woodbridge netminder, Matthew George, as player of the game. "Matt George was very calm under pressure, very sure hands whenever he went up in a crowd," commented Topalovic. "He made three or four big saves for them." "Today George made some key saves at the right time, and was the best player," agreed Pinizotto. "But turning point was the save on a penalty shot just before half time from Windsor goalkeeper, Kyle Vizarakis. I thought the goalkeeper and Stephen Ademolu were the best players from Windsor." Woodbridge will now play Durham United FC in a semi-final on Aug 4, 9 p.m. at Vaughan Grove.
