Tue Jul 14 Written By: Staff, League1 Blue Devils' Felipe Vilela (13', 42, 66') and Gary Giffin (76') made sure the Oakville side continued their blistering winning form at the top of the League1 Ontario table, downing 2014 title-winning side Toronto FC Academy 4-0. "Our biggest concern for this particular game was selecting and preparing the correct squads for our busiest weekend of the season so far," said Oakville head coach Duncan Wilde. "Not only did we face TFC in League1 action, we had a crucial U21 game earlier in the day, together with an Academy road trip to Indiana. After collecting maximum points south of the border and an important three points against ANB in OSL action earlier in the day, Billy Steele took control of the Blue Devils for our home game with TFC. Facing our good friend and former Toronto Lynx coach Stuart Neeley, a crowd of around 500 where on hand for an exciting game at Sheridan College stadium." Oakville came out the gates with a point to prove, and high-flying striker Felipe Vilela made sure the Devils wouldn't go home empty-handed, scoring three in just over an hour. ''Some early pressure and creative play from TFC jolted us into action," commented Oakville coach Billy Steele. "I thought we started a little slowly but had to react to the young TFC boys and their speed of play very quickly. "They do link the play together very well and any teams allowing them space to do that will certainly get punished. The TFC centre-backs could not handle Filipe today, and he caused them problems throughout the game, scoring a well deserved hat trick in an excellent performance and 4-0 win." [We are] the youngest team in the League1 I think, and thus we struggle with the lack of experience," said Toronto FC Academy head coach, Stuart Neely. "We make very, very youthful mistakes." "At 2-0 we hit a goal post then missed an open goal. We then conceded a third goal early in the second half. I don't think we will gain 5-10 years of experience in one week, but we will certainly work on defensive priorities and finishing yet again," he added. Oakville head coach Duncan Wilde, though happy with the Devils performances to date, refused to rest on laurels. "We are very happy to reach the half way point with a little cushion at the top of the League" said Wilde. "We completely understand that the second half of the season will be equally as challenging, particularly as many of us will lose our NCAA boys back to school in the next few weeks. "However, that will provide more opportunity for the Academy players and our future Blue Devils to contribute, and the reason why we have included several already during the first part of the season." Toronto FC Academy meets second place Vaughan Azzurri on Sunday July 19 at Kia Training Ground, 1:45 p.m. kickoff. Oakville plays away to Sanjaxx Lions on Sunday July 19 at Esther Shiner Stadium, 7 p.m. kickoff.
