June 14, 2015 League 1 Ontario--Sanjaxx Lions vs Vaughan Azzurri (from League 1 Ontario press release)
Sanjaxx Lions 0 - Vaughan Azzurri 7 . Mon Jun 15 Written By: Staff, League1 Vaughan Azzurri demonstrated a ruthless attitude to finishing on Sunday, with five different players hitting the target against Sanjaxx Lions in a 7-0 victory in League1 Ontario Men's Matchweek Seven play. With the result, the Azzurri pin themselves squarely into second place, two points behind Oakville Blue Devils in first, but with a significant pad of six points over Sigma, ANB and Durham United F.C. - all tied for third place. Joey Cicchillo wasted no time getting one on the board for the Azzurri, knocking in his first of the day on eight minutes. Midfielder Jonathan Lao joined the scoring summary on seventeen minutes, before his Matt Stinson made it three for the visitors in the twenty-fourth minute. Sanjaxx made some changes, bringing in Yosias Kibreab for Frank Brown in the twenty-eighth minute, and the Lions had a period of momentum late in the half, notably marked by a free kick effort from #10 Lael Daniel in the thirty-seventh minute. Yet the Azzurri wouldn't be held out for long, and Dena Iezady knocked in a fourth just ahead of the half. A flurry of substitutions occurred on the half and through the early stage of the second frame, as both sides tried to adjust their personnel based on the lopsided scoreline - Vaughan seeking to utilize it's depth, and Sanjaxx desperately seeking a successful formula to launch a comeback. But Vaughan steadily chipped away at the Lions' resolve, with Iezady getting his second (48'), Cicchillo doing the same (74'), and Andre Dyer (86') completing the set of seven goals just minutes before the end of regulation. The Sanjaxx Lions will have a few days to lick their wounds and regroup, with the next match a league fixture on Sunday June 21 at home in Esther Shiner Stadium vs. fellow 2015 League1 Ontario debutantes Pro Stars F.C. Kickoff is 9 p.m. However, the Azzurri must regroup far more quickly, as a midweek L1 Cup fixture pits them against Master's FA Saints on Wednesday June 17 at McNaughton Field, 8 p.m. kickoff. Vaughan is back at league play on Sunday June 21 at Vaughan Grove (7 p.m.), facing local rivals Woodbridge Azzurri in one of League1 Ontario's most exciting derbies.
