Final Score:......Canada.........0........Costa Rica........0.........

Attendance was listed as 16674. I didn't hear an announcement at the game but found the stat on mlssoccer.com. The crowd gradually built up from about 5:00pm when the gates were opened through the 6:00pm start of the Jamaica vs El Salvador match at about 5000. That game had more blue of El Salvador supporters. Jamaica won that game 1-0 on a goal against the run of play.

The threat of rain which had been forecast for days may have killed some of the walk up crowd but people knew that Canada had a chance to advance if they outright won this game.

Canada got to host a Gold Cup game for the first time. Critics can use today's crowd as an answer to those Toronto-centric complainers who said Toronto deserved to host some of the Women's World Cup games last month. Across the parking lot the PanAm games were hosting beach volleyball in a temporary facility...actually the stands and sand took up a large chunk of the parking lot. There was also a large stage that was hosting bands for PanAm attendees.

Kenny Stamatopolous earned the shutout for the Canadians. He had to make some good saves some of which were palmed or punched away rather than caught which was understandable with a wet ball and the rain falling. His counterpart Esteban Alvarado needed more goalmouth clearance from his defenders but also kept Canada off the board. I felt Costa Rica's Johan Venegas had two of their best chances, at 48 and 61 minutes, both requiring good saves.

Possession seemed to even out as Canada were pressing at the end. It became clear that Costa Rica was playing for the tie in the second half as they slowed down and resorted to time wasting while making subs or taking throw-ins. As the other result in their group was known as it had finished only half hour before this one began, they knew they needed only a point to advance.

Referee Hector Rodriguez gave out three Yellow cards--two to Costa Rica--all in the last third of the game. He gave Canada a lot of freekicks in that time too but it was up to Canada to capitalise and they couldn't.

Canada will require one more home-and-home series of World Cup qualifying in September before joining a group of four teams and need to finish top two to advance to the hex. Ties are OK in a two team series but in group games they are almost a loss for both teams.

Canada will not be going to a newly formatted Copa America to play against South American teams--I'd heard maybe five Concacaf teams would be joining that contest as soon as the next cycle.

Final group standings were: Jamaica 7, Costa Rica 3, El Salvador 2, Canada 2. Canada finishes last because although they had the same -1 goal difference, they didn't score any goals while El Salavador at least scored one. These results should hurt Canada's FIFA ranking. Up to three teams in the groups can go through but it looks doubtful that two points are enough as one win bypasses that total.

Perhaps Canadian fans hopes were raised too high and maybe a backlash will result of the 'same old Canada' like around ten years ago when we had the same problem of not being able to score.

This was the second Gold Cup in a row that Canada has not scored a goal. This time they were one tie better getting two instead of one.

Canada's new young strike force of Cyle Larin and Tesho Akindele never got a chance to connect as Larin didn't enter the game until 67 minutes and Akindele didn't play at all. Canada only had one striker at the start of the game with Marcus Haber the only forward.

After the game there were two press conferences one after another with the coach and one star player from each team. I should have the complete audio of each posted on my web site in the next week.

Costa Rican coach Paulo Wanchope and defender Giancarlo Gonzalez were up first (19 minutes) and they spoke in Spanish with delayed translation. Wanchope said it was tough to qualify as they were all tough opponents but in football, it's not who 'deserves' to win but it comes down to the result. He did feel however that tonight's result was fair but they deserved to win their game against El Salvador. (An injury time goal earned El Salvador a tie). He said they now had to prepare in the next few days and improve and with video analysis will choose his best team. He said tonight they stood up to Canada's aerial game. Canada was always trying to play the ball to their #9. He said it was chaotic at the end when Canada put on more forwards. He felt his team had the better control of play.

Canada's coach Benito Floro (he also used a translator but could answer in English) and David Edgar were the Canadian reps (32 minutes). Floro said he had to balance the results of this tournament with the team's progress. We finished the group with two points and almost three except for allowing the injury time goal against Jamaica. He's not happy but very positive in that they kept their formation, and good positioning will help them grow. We wanted to go as far as possible and this was a real test and he saw more positive than negative. He answered that they have deep enough talent but six important players are out of the lineup. Maybe one out is OK but without six they didn't have enough to beat Costa Rica and Jamaica. He said his players are skilled but could dribble better. He said we are on the way but are in a difficult position as our players are not all starters on their club teams and some of their players are off for the summer. He wouldn't nominate a player he's most proud of in growth. The team is very defensive as in 1.5 years they've had twelve games and only three have been at home. They've scored 17 and only allowed 6 and they've played some good teams during that time. Later he said that Canada should have it's own league and the youth players should play the style of the first team.

As the two press conferences went on so long, all the players had vanished although David Edgar stayed behind to answer a few more questions in a hallway interview.
