November 7, 2014 League 1 Ontario--Year End Awards (by Rocket Robin)
Award winners for League 1 Ontario given out at the Onatario Soccer League's 101st Annual Awards Banquet held on Friday November 7th, 2014 at Fontana Gardens in Vaughan at 7:30pm. League 1 Ontario had eight of the awards given out tonight. Winners: 1. League 1 Ontario Cup Champions—Vaughan Azzurri 2. Young Star Award (Top U20)--Christopher Mannella of Toronto FC Academy 3. Coach of the Year—Peter Pinizzotto of Woodbridge Strikers 4. Top Goaltender—Anthony Santilli of Windsor Stars (the only winner who wasn't in attendance) 5. Golden Boot Winner—Molham Babouli of Toronto FC Academy 6. Most Valuable Player—Molham Babouli of Toronto FC Academy 7. League 1 Ontario Runner Up—Woodbridge Strikers 8. League 1 Ontario Champions—Toronto FC Academy The dinner got off to a late start as the meal wasn't served until 8:45pm. Thankfully for me the League 1 Ontario hardware was given out first so I could then enjoy my coffee and dessert. There must have been 100 trophies and plaques to give out. The awards given out tonight covered the Ontario Soccer League's Central and South Region (there's five regions in the province so I was told). There were no awards given out to children—ie youngest player was 17 and there were no awards for women's soccer (that's a separate banquet I was answered). So many sub groups—OSL South Region West, and OSL South Region South. Attendance was up to 400 as 39 tables of ten each although I was beside an empty table and the table I was at had just me and three guys from Panathinaikos Toronto who stayed to pick up their plaque as OSL 2014 Central Premier Runners Up. David Gee, Ontario Soccer League Administrator was the MC of the night and also had to read out door prizes during the meal before the awards were given out. He mentioned my name to take a bow and mentioned something about my work back at the start of Toronto Lynx in 1997 (Gee was assistant GM for the team back then) and in the next sentence he mentioned Peter Pinnizzotto who was the Lynx first head coach. Some of the other league trophies were given out to League 1 Ontario feeder teams and players. It took about 45 minutes to give out the awards to the increasing fidgety crowd. I walked up to the award table before dinner and could read the winner's names. At other banquets I've seen the individual player's names taped over so we're unsure who won. Oops! I noticed Christopher Mannella's surname was spelled with only one 'n'. I tipped him off before dinner. I took about three hours to correct my web pages after the season ended as the league rosters kept the same misspelling right through the season. Dino Rossi Jr., chair of League 1 Ontario says that as soon as next year they may have their own banquet especially since they'll have a women's league. Now tomorrow night Toronto FC Academy will play the second leg of the Div III InterPro Champions Cup against CS Longueil, the champions of the Premier League of Soccer Quebec (PLSQ). The game will be in Pickering at the Pickering Soccer Complex at 8:00pm. I remember looking last month of Google Maps to try to find it but I saw just an open field. Thankfully it has just been built in the last few months and it's inside a big bubble so the game will be indoors! The night time temperatures around here are now down to just above 0 C. Rossi said the complex just got their permit earlier today. Toronto FC Academy has a 4-0 lead after last weekend's win in Quebec. Rocket Robin robing@eol.ca
