Halftime Entertainment:...Today there was a contest in the center circle but instead of little kids from local soccer clubs it was four adult contestants dressed as soccer balls kicking a ball into a net with the last scorer in each round eliminated. This time the Benny Hill theme was played and it was appropriate because the contestants could barely see the ball. There was a fan video shown on the scoreboard with pictures taken by the fans with music of Phil Phillips song "Home" playing. They also played the "Thank You Fans" video again as they did before the start of the first half. This one was players thanking the fans and promising to be better next year.

Attendance was announced as 13211. That was very low considering that this was against Toronto's main rival. There were hundreds of Impact supports in the visitors section. I received a ticket offer from the Canadian Soccer Association for a 40% discount on ticket prices. From the empty sections I noticed it didn't look like there was a walk up crowd at all and this could partially explained by the cold, the wind, and the rain. If MLS ever changes to the FIFA requested August to April season to be just like Europe it would be one of the few reasons I would give up my season tickets.
Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was announced but for the first time in seven years I didn't notice who it was because I was busy talking to someone. Before the game, defender Ryan Richter was awarded the Esquire (watch company) Player of the Month award for his charitable work.
The cold weather but more importantly the rain limited my enjoyment of this game. It had rained all day until two hours before game time then started to rain again just before the game started time and continued until stopping at the 20 minutes mark. That was the time I could start my handwritten notes. (the first part of the game I've had to fake by watching the television broadcast. As I was one of the first 7000 fans to show up, I received a knitted toque from the sponsor KIA Motors. I had worn one today but this one was in the team colours and I'll be wearing this all this winter. This year it is certainly better than the off-center logo design of last year and the one with the pull strings to tie a year or two before that.
It was an important game for Toronto FC to win as it now makes two home game wins in a row and can be used in their season ticket renewal campaign for 2014 although that is not supposed to start until January when TFC will have announced at least two new designated players. Of course for the Impact it was a must win game to assure themselves of a playoff spot and a win would have assured them of the 3rd spot. Now they will have to wait for results on Sunday to find out if they hang on to at least 5th spot. The Impact have never won at BMO Field against TFC in the MLS season nor the Canadian Championship competition. Marco Di Vaio stayed stalled as tied for the leading MLS scorer at 20 goals with Chicago Fire's Mike Magee. Impact are cold having now won only one game in their last eight MLS games. Ahh but they at least almost clinched a playoff spot in only their second year of MLS play (TFC have not made it in their first seven) and this year they did win the Canadian Championship and were knocked out of the CONCACAF Championship League on goal differential with all teams in their group finishing with 2 wins and 2 losses.
This was expected to be the last game for TFC goalie Stefan Frei before he'd be released because of hit relatively large salary. He was promised a send-off from what was said at the President's Breakfast for season ticket holders last month but since he played in their game last week in Chicago because of #1 goalie Joe Bendik's suspension , I suspect they felt that was enough. He coudn't have played a more perfect game that Bendik's shutout today earned with two point blank saves including one in the 86 minute mark. Kyle Bekker was a starter at last (and that was an early complaint raised at the President's breakfast. Bekker had a shot off the bar from 22 yards at 37 minutes. Departing defender Richard Eckersley--another player being dropped for his large salary--didn't even make the reserves bench today.
TFC could have put this game away earlier with them sometimes passing one too many times or shooting off target. That is really what the team needs for next year as their defensive play is now good enough to get by in the league. They've only scored 30 goals in 34 games (that's actually 6 goals less than last year). Defensively they've cut their goals against from 62 to 47.
I wouldn't expect that either team would be excited to play and MLS Reserves League game tonight or tomorrow. The game they were scheduled to play on August 14th was postponed and never rescheduled. I didn't see any players warming up after the game so I left for home and didn't care to stay any longer in the cold night. TFC Reserves also had a home game against New York that was always listed as 'TBA' and has never been played.
