Attendance was only about 25 on this cool night. This game was originally scheduled for Friday August 9th at Centennial Stadium but was postponed because of the flood damage at that venue. It was to be played at Centennial tonight but now because of the damage caused by the extreme sports permit holders a few weeks ago it was changed to Shiner on two days notice.
I double checked at the end of the game and referee Michael Stenbring said he hadn't given out a single Yellow card. The game wasn't tame but the players were more interested in getting runs up and down the field. White Eagles were caught on some offsides especially around the 27 minute mark but once they timed it better, they were able to race through the defence for some long runs. Burlington SC got away with a few hand balls that weren't called in the first half or there would have been at least one Penalty kick call.
Nikola Midrag scored the first three goals for White Eagles to earn a natural hat trick. His two goals in the same minute pulled them away from Burlington and the match wasn't in doubt (well also helped by the SWE defenders breaking up plays). .
I took over the broadcast booth getting the microphone from the stadium office, checked the national anthem was input, reset the scoreboard for a soccer game/clock count up, announced the starting lineups and goals and the night went alright on the PA front.
White Eagles play again at this venue on Friday night against league leaders Kingston FC in a schedule tougher than Montreal Impact of the MLS as they have to make up all those postponed games in time for the playoffs next month.
White Eagles record improves to 6 wins, 10 losses and 1 tie as they pass Burlington and move into 10th place. Burlington's record falls to 6 wins, 13 losses, 0 ties for 11th place. Both teams are trying to grab the 8th and last playoff place.
News from yesterday is the venue for the final this year will be in Niagara Falls the first weekend in November. Niagara United is the one team that has almost no chance of making the playoffs as they're nestled in 12th at the foot of the table. The playoff schedule shows there will be no 'wild card' entry of the host team which London City and North York Astros had used in past years to obtain a playoff position.
