EARLY GOALS WIN REGION CLASH FOR NIAGARA UNITED Niagara United defeated its regional rival St. Catharines Wolves 3-2 in the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday. Niagara’s goals all came in the first half with Rudy Pikzinski scoring the opening goal after eight minutes in an entertaining encounter at Club Roma, St. Catharines. Pikzinski caught the top left corner of the net with a drive from 12 yards to put the visitors one-up. Defender Matt Waddington made it 2-0 at the 15th minute mark and Gary Boughton struck the third goal for Niagara United when he found the middle of the net out of reach of St. Catharines goalkeeper Matthew Greco for a 3-0 score at 32 minutes. St. Catharines attempted to get back into the game with some success, starting with a goal by midfielder Lucas Folino who headed in a right wing cross to make it 3-1 at the 34th minute and Folino scored a second goal when he beat Niagara goalkeeper Brad Gemmell 10 minutes later for a 3-2 score at the 44th minute mark and at the final whistle. Niagara United improve to a 3-13-3 WLT record for 12 points, but remain at the bottom of the standings, while St. Catharines are now at 6-12-0 for 18 points in eighth position. One other game scheduled for Wednesday, the Serbian White Eagles vs. Toronto Croatia clash due to be played at Centennial Stadium in Toronto was postponed due to earlier damage to the playing surface, which is now under repair.
