July 17, 2013 CSL--details of Wednesday game (from CSL website)
WOLVES STUN TORONTO CROATIA…. CSL champions’ first loss in a year A picture goal by St. Catharines midfielder Scott MacLennan who struck a free kick from 25 yards leaving Croatia goalkeeper Ilic helpless, gave the home side a stunning 2-1 victory over the perennial CSL champions Toronto Croatia at Club Roma in St. Catharines Wednesday night. The Toronto side went into Wednesday’s match with an unbeaten 6-0-3 (WLT) record for 21 points and poised to take over the top position in the CSL First Division with what was expected to be just another routine win to extend an unbeaten streak going back more than 12 months. Croatia’s last defeat was a 1-0 loss to SC Waterloo on July 8, 2012. Since then, they have captured the CSL First Division title and successfully defended their previous year CSL championship win with a 1-0 triumph over Montreal Impact Academy on October 27, 2012 By contrast, the Garden City side have been struggling of late with just two wins and tied for last place in the league’s top division of 12 teams. But the home side were full marks for their victory with a strong display that gave the Roma Wolves the game’s opening goal at 28 minutes by midfielder Zack Bewley. The Port Colbourne native took a pass from Camilo Veloza to find the net from 15 yards just inside the right corner. Toronto Croatia levelled the score 1-1 at 43 minutes when defender Sven Arapovic found the net past St. Catharines ‘keeper Matthew Greco off a corner kick and it was 1-1 at the break. Both teams pressed for the winner into the second half and MacLennan’s superb strike of the dead ball at 56 minutes was worthy of a winning goal that held up until referee Scott Decker blew his whistle to end the game. The whistle came just four minutes after the referee had shown the red card to Lucas Andrade of St. Catharines, sent off for serious foul play. St. Catharines improve to a 3-5-0 record for 9 points in the standings, while Toronto Croatia are at 6-1-3 for 21 points, still trailing York Region Shooters and Kingston FC with 22 points at the top.
