Attendance was announced as 22453 on this warm late afternoon. There had been a rainstorm during the warm ups. The attendance was the largest to watch any soccer game ever played here including Toronto FC, the Canadian Men's national team, and all the games held here during the Men's FIFA Under 20 World Cup tournament. This game was announced as SOLD OUT after the first day. The game was promoted as 'The Rematch' to build off the memories of the Canada vs USA semi-final at last summer's Olympic games in England which the USA won 4-3 in extra time. The USA's domination of Canada through history is now 45 wins, 5 ties, 3 losses.

I was at the game on May 25, 2009 here at BMO Field to watch the USA beat Canada 4-0 in front of a crowd of 10,255 so they picked the right references to sell this game. Today's game had the fans counting off the six seconds the goalie had to get rid of the ball after picking it up--they counted too fast. They were looking forward to Hope Solo but she is recovering from shoulder surgery so today's goalie was Nicole Barnhart who didn't have much work to do to earn the shutout.

The game officials were from Mexico. Canadian players and media blamed the Olympic loss on the Swedish referee making two controversial calls. No complaints by the players today. The only Yellow card was given to Sydney Leroux for excessive goal celebration.

Canada held even with the USA throughout the first half with up to five defenders always back to stop American attacks.

Alex Morgan's goals were almost identical in her runs and the place where she took her shots and the part of the net that she put them. Sydney LeRoux also scored with a run down the same wing but deked the goalie to score on a tap-in.

Next week these players will be back on their club teams in the NWSL down in the USA with teammates who they played against today in national colours. I'd expect the anger by the Canadian players has cooled down from a year ago but was hyped up again to sell tickets.

Tiffany Cameron debuted in today's game for the Senior national team. She was playing as recently as 2009 for Toronto Lady Lynx joining a long line of grads from that team and their previous life as Toronto Inferno--I've covered those teams since the Inferno formed in 1998. Of the 36 players photographed in the 2013 Canada Soccer Yearbook I counted at a minimum that 16 of them played for one of those Toronto teams. [NOTE: I found out the next Wednesday that it's actually 17 for 34 when I saw Kedeisha Buchanan came in as a substitute for Toronto Lady Lynx and scored the only goal of the game in their victory over London Gryphons.]

Announced at the pregame press conference is that the next home game for the Women's Canadian national team will be on Wednesday October 30, 2013 in Edmonton.

Some of the pregame television coverage was dropped as the Sportsnet Network scheduled a baseball game between Atlanta and Washington and were then committed to show it as that game dragged on and on...
