MONTREAL ACADEMY, MISSISSAUGA EAGLES, SC WATERLOO ALL REGISTER LATE SEASON VICTORIES…..Shooters hold Toronto Croatia to scoreless tie SC Waterloo’s Drazen Vukovic hits a hat-trick With only one position of the top four in the CSL standings decided – that of Toronto Croatia – the schedule for the quarterfinals rests on the outcome of the upcoming midweek clash between the academy teams of TFC and the Impact from Montreal. That conclusion follows Sunday’s results that saw Montreal Impact Academy defeat SC Toronto, 1-0 and York Region Shooters hold Toronto Croatia to a scoreless tie. In the two other games, Mississauga Eagles FC pulled away from Brantford Galaxy 6-3, and SC Waterloo downed St. Catharines Wolves, 4-0. SC Toronto travelled to Mont Royal, Quebec for their final game of the regular season, a clash with Montreal Impact Academy looking for an opportunity to take over second position in the CSL First Division standings. The 1-0 defeat of SC Toronto by the Quebec side puts the Impact academy team in a position of taking the runner-up position if they can defeat TFC Academy on Wednesday, October 10. Kai Morton struck the winner for Montreal Academy at the 30 minute mark in a chippy encounter that saw a player from each side ejected. Dominic Roberts of SC Toronto was the first to be shown a red card at the 70th minute mark and Wandrille Lefevre picked up two cautions to be shown a red five minutes later. Montreal Impact Academy has a 13-3-5 WLT record for 44 points in third position in the standings, two points behind SC Toronto with a completed regular season record of 14-4-4 for 46 points. Both teams begin playoff competition the weekend October 12 – 14. Mississauga Eagles FC outlasted the Galaxy 6-3 in the final game for both sides played at Lions Park in Brantford, with Anthony Smith scoring the opening goal for Mississauga at the 7th minute mark. Nick Charles tied the game 1-1 for Brantford at 17 minutes, he put the ball past the Mississauga goalkeeper Antoine Paul from seven yards off a corner kick, but immediately after the restart Andrew Samuels regained the lead for Mississauga, taking the ball down the right side to score from 20 yards. Simo Vrakela scored from 10 yards to tie the game 2-2 for the Galaxy, the goal coming at 25 minutes, before the visitors scored twice – Anthony Smith, his second at 39 minutes and midfielder Kunle Fayehun to make it 4-2 at the interval. Mississauga’s Andrew Samuels increased the lead to 5-2 soon after the break, followed by a goal from Aleks Zwierzynski who drove the ball just under the crossbar for a 6-2 Mississauga lead, Damion Scott scored from five yards for Brantford Galaxy at the 85th minute mark to complete the scoring, 6-3 in favour of Mississauga Eagles. Mississauga Eagles FC complete their season with a 8-9-5 record for 29 points, while Brantford Galaxy finish with an 8-13-1 record for 25 points. Drazen Vukovic scored three goals in the 4-0 SC Waterloo victory over St. Catharines Wolves at Worrier Field in the University of Waterloo, to put the striker into the lead position in the CSL goalscoring title race that ends October 10. Croatia-born Vukovic, who previously played for Brantford Galaxy and for several clubs in Europe including HNK Hajduk Split, scored at 9, 72 and 80 minutes for 20 goals in this season’s campaign. Mohammad-Ali Heydarpour struck the other SC Waterloo goal at 59 minutes. SC Waterloo has a 10-11-1 record for 34 points and ninth place in the standings to just miss the playoffs in their inaugural CSL season, while St. Catharines Wolves completed their schedule with a 1-16-5 record for 8 points. In the late game Sunday night, Toronto Croatia were held to a scoreless tie by York Region Shooters at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, a game that was played largely in the midfield with few opportunities for either side to find the net. Toronto Croatia completed their regular season on top with a 15-1-6 record for 51 points, while York Region Shooters complete the regular season with a 9-2-11 record for 38 points and are presently in fifth position in the standings. There is one game remaining in the CSL First Division – Montreal Impact Academy travel to Downsview Park on Wednesday, October 10, that’s an 8 pm kickoff. The following eight teams have qualified for the First Division playoffs: Toronto Croatia, SC Toronto, Montreal Impact Academy, Windsor Stars, York Region Shooters, TFC Academy, Serbian White Eagles and Niagara United. The following eight reserve teams have qualified for the CSL Second Division playoffs: TFC Academy II, Windsor Stars B, Niagara United B, SC Toronto B, SC Waterloo B, York Region Shooters B, Brampton City Utd B and Mississauga Eagles FC B. The top four teams in the final standings will have the home advantage in the quarterfinal games yet to be announced.
