SHOOTERS, NIAGARA UNITED SCORE VICTORIES… Penalties play a part in Sunday games

Penalty box infringements cost Brampton City Utd dearly after taking an early lead
in the game against Niagara United at Victoria Park Sunday afternoon, while in one
evening encounter York Region Shooters recovered from an early second half set-back
to eventually control the game and defeat North York Astros.

Brampton’s Mark Jankovic opened the scoring after just eight minutes in the game
with Niagara United, the veteran defender heading past Niagara goalkeeper
Jonathan Bruggeling from a free kick taken outside the 18 yard line.

It took just two minutes for Niagara United to equalize from the penalty spot
after referee Gianni Fucchini ordered the kick following a hand ball inside
the box. Mohammed Mohammed beat Brampton goalkeeper Euloge Awitor Kodzo
to make it 1-1 at the 10th minute mark and that was the score at the break.

As the second half progressed the game appeared headed for a tie until
referee Facchini ordered a second penalty to the visitors following
a rough challenge by Brampton goalkeeper Awitor Kodzo on an incoming
Niagara forward, and Anthony Mermigas scored from the spot at the
88th minute mark. The game ended 2-1 in favour of Niagara United for
their fifth victory of the season.

Following a scoreless first half at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple,
York Region Shooters had to come from a 1-0 deficit in the second half
following an opening goal by North York defender Kurt Ramsey. He scored
from the penalty spot at the 53rd minute mark after referee Matt Meloche
pointed to the spot when Astros’ Michael Tischer was brought down inside
the penalty area.

York Region equalized five minutes later, a goal by midfielder Andre Manders
and Sargon Mate made it 2-1 for the home side, a low shot that found the
net at the 84th minute mark.

York Region Shooters were also awarded a penalty when Kadian Leckie was brought
down in the box and the York Region forward took the kick to beat Astros’
goalkeeper Enea Perego for a 3-1 score at 88 minutes and the score held
to the final whistle.

There was one game in the CSL Second Division Sunday, Brampton City Utd
defeating Niagara United B 5-4.
