TFC Academy, the senior academy team of Toronto FC, defeated Kingston FC 4-2 in well-played home opener of the
CSL regular season at the Invista Sports Complex at Kingston Saturday.
This is Kingston FC’s inaugural season in the CSL First Division following two seasons playing exhibition games as Prospect FC
against CSL reserve teams in 2010 and entering the CSL Second Division in 2011.
TFC Academy ended their 2011 campaign 10th of 14 in the CSL standings, a period during which an increasing number
of players were elevated to the Toronto FC first team in Major League Soccer and have played for either Canada’s U-17s
or the U-20 squad.
TFC took the lead at 34 minutes on a goal by Marko Miketic who picked up a long ball on the right wing to score with a low drive
past Kingston ‘keeper Morgan Kenny and it was 1-0 at the break.
The visitors went further ahead with two goals by forward Mario Kovacevic, his first at 47 minutes from 25 yards just under
the bar and the second 11 minutes later to make it 3-0.
Kingston FC cut the lead to 3-1 with a goal by Mademba Ba, he picked up a loose ball in midfield to outpace the Toronto defenders
and score past goalkeeper Angelo Cavalluzzo.
Edgar Soglo scored Kingston’s second goal for a 3-2 score at 65 minutes, but at 70 minutes TFC Academy went further ahead
when Kenny failed to handle a long shot from Michel Wagenknecht for a 4-2 lead, which held to the final whistle.
