Attendance was announced as 17712 on this cold night with a wind from the north. The stands looked full. Since the tickets on sale were sold out, the upper deck of the west side was opened up for last week sales and the walk up crowd. Unlike the other games, there appeared to be no support for the visiting team.
Canada had a lot of chances to score (a 35 to 7 edge in goal attempts, 21 to 2 in the first half) but always had a problem. They kept being caught on offsides and appeared almost afraid to run up.
A 3-0 victory would have been satisfying in the week leading up to this game but just before the game it was announced around the press box that Cuba only had the minimum of 11 players and no substitutes! Some of their players had gone missing and it was immediately thought that they had asked for political asylum so they could enter the United States where they would automatically be welcomed. Now the expectation went up that Canada would score seven or eight goals. Canada started off well with a goal at 13 minutes but had great difficulty increasing their lead. There was a spell between 56 to 68 minutes where Cuba almost scored. Cuba drew a Red card at 70 minutes and finally began to tire out and Canada scored two more goals. The Cuban coach said at the press conference after the game that besides coping with the cold weather that they weren't used to, two players were injured but played the entire game--one of them continued after being patched up with five stitches.
Mixed in with Canada's strong finish was Olivier Occean picking up a Red card for pushing the goalie after Odelin Molina held onto the ball after a goal even though Will Johnson had already motioned to pull the ball out of his hands and Molina then throwing the ball away. With Canada's leading scorer Dwayne De Rosario picking up a knee injury in the away game against Panama and now Occean also missing the next game, it's made it more difficult for Canada to score in next week's group finale against Honduras.
Rolling up the score turned out to be unimportant later in the night as it turned out that Honduras pulled out a 0-0 draw in Panama and earn an eighth point in the group. Now Canada (with 10 points) need to win or at least a tie against Honduras so a one or two goal loss and get through on goal difference is no longer good enough.
I've seen games in the CSL and W-League with teams playing with a minimum of eleven players--in fact I've seen a team with ten a few tims and heard about a team of nine for a CSL playoff game. Sometimes these teams start off competivive but tire out in the second half and with smart substitutions by their full bench opponents, they can be exploited. The fact at the international level that Canada couldn't pull away sooner and the home games resulting in scoreless ties against USA in an exhibition game and Honduras earlier in this round and even scoring only one goal against Panama and that was on almost a trick play is worrying looking ahead to the away game against Honduras.
