Attendance was listed as 17856 on this warm evening. All sections looked mostly full except half of the north end stand was empty with the other half being filled with Panama fans. This was a very pro Canadian crowd. The Zac Brown Band was playing across the street at the Molson Amphitheatre.

First surprise was Panama did not come out for a warm up before the game except for their goalies. The Canadian Women's National team was introduced before the game but that didn't take long. They were wearing their bronze medals won at the London Olympics a few weeks ago.

Dwayne De Rosario scored the only goal of the game and it was sort of a trick play but perfectly legal. Atiba Hutchinson took a quick freekick across the box while the Panama pleyers hadn't even set up to try and block. They were just standing around. De Rosario was standing all alone and had time to stop the ball and knock it into the net with just the goalie to beat. Canada had scored a similar quick freekick + goal when they had a friendly here at BMO stadium last year against Ecuador and scored in extra time to gain a 2-2 tie while the Ecuador team was crowding around the referee complaining about the awarding of the freekick.

The play was made so fast that I didn't even see it until I heard the cheer go up from the crowd. I wasn't the only one besides the Panama team but the television cameras and commentators didn't catch it right away. Only after some alternate angles were played did we find one that showed the actual play.

This was De Rosario's 20th goal for Canada's Senior team and breaks the record he held with Dale Mitchell. 20 goals isn't a lot but there were many years when Canada didn't play many friendlies nor advance in tournaments to get more games.

Canada started off fast and dominated the first half. Panama came on in the second half and had a few chances to score. Canada has trouble scoring and this was only their second goal of the round after three games and their first game at home after a 0-0 tie with Honduras after their first home game after a 1-0 away win in Cuba.

This win was absolutely crucial to Canada. They now suddenly take the lead in the group with 7 points with Panama with 6 points and Honduras with 4 and Cuba with 0. Honduras had beaten Cuba earlier in the day. Canada now goes down to Panama on Tuesday for the return fixture while Honduras plays Cuba again.
