Attendance was announced as 16132 on this warm evening. All sections looked filled except one of the two sections in the north end reserved for visiting fans and the unsold west side stands above the 15th row. Before the game I heard horn honking and saw blue & white flags which I thought meant the Greek soccer team had won their game today in the Euros. Nope when I put on my glasses, they were Honduran flags. I thought maybe Honduran fans would outnumber Canadian ones but it was just the visitors had arrived first and Canadians were still coming here after work.
Best chances tonight were at 39 minutes when Honduran Antony Lozano had a clear shot and fired wide right from 6 yards. 67 minutes had Canadian David Edgar head wide left of the post from 8 yards when he received a cornerkick from the right. 87 minutes had Honduran Roger Espinoza blasted a 40 yard shot down the middle just over the bar. Injury time had Canadian Kevin McKenna lean in at 10 yards on the right to head a cornerkick wide right. Final chance in injury time was Edgar heading from 6 yards down the middle wide left of the net when he received a freekick from 30 yards. Canada's Will Johnson put the ball into play on the three Canadian chances that I mentioned. The Hondurans had zero shots on target tonight.
The result tonight give Canada four points with one win (on the road against Cuba) and tie. One goal for and no goals against. Leading the group although we didn't know this until later in the night is Panama with two wins in two games after a 1-0 win against Cuba at home. Honduras has one tie and one loss and Cuba two losses. Tonight's result was better for Canada than four years ago when Honduras came to Canada in the second game of the group and won 2-1 in Montreal. Watching tonight, Canada had more chances than Honduras to win the game and may well regret this when they have to travel to Honduras for the return match. Next up for Canada is two games in a row against Panama who are the highest ranked team in the group. The first is a home game at BMO Field on September 7th. Two teams of the four qualify for the hexagonal next year for World Cup berths.
The wind was a factor for both teams in both halfs coming in from the north. Goal kicks would be held up or travel too far depending on which way they were facing.
I felt Julian de Guzman played excellent with him dribbling through the midfield. He never seems to play this well at this stadium when he's suited up for Toronto FC.
