Edmonton First Soccer Championship at Commonwealth Stadium Voyageurs Cup By: Krista Rivet Apr.27.2011 For the first time ever, the Nutrilite Canadian Championship is being played in Edmonton and the local team will be taking on two-time winners, Toronto FC. FC Edmonton returned home from their first three games in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with a record of 2-0-1, with their only defeat coming on the Carolina pitch against the RailHawks. Their next challenge is a team from Major League Soccer (MLS), Toronto FC, on Wednesday when they meet at Commonwealth Stadium. In fact, all four Canadian pro teams play next week for the right to represent their country at the CONCACAF championship during the Nutrilite Canadian Championship. The Montréal Impact, from the NASL, will face the Vancouver Whitecaps of MLS while Toronto FC will meet FC Edmonton. Each series will feature two games, with the winners of each meeting in a final two game round to determine Canada’s best team for 2011. The winner of CONCACAF, Confederation o f North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football, then moves on to the FIFA Club World Cup. While it may be the first time FC Edmonton take to the national stage as a team, many of the players have represented their country at various levels of play throughout their soccer careers. The game starts at 6 p.m. tonight, April 27 at Commonwealth Stadium and tickets are available on line at FCEdmonton.com or at the gate.
