Toronto FC announced Friday that they have acquired defender Richard Eckersley on loan from Burnley of the Npower Championship division in England.

“Richard is a good player, he comes from Manchester United’s youth program. We are rebuilding our defence and the season is very long so we’re happy
to add another right back,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Technical Director, Aron Winter.

“Paul knows Richard very well and I am convinced he can fit into our system.”

Eckersley, 22, began his youth career at Manchester United and made two appearances with the senior side. He was also part of Manchester United’s
League Cup Final victory over Tottenham in March 2009. Eckersley signed a four-year contract with Burnley in July 2009 and has been a part of loan
deals at Plymouth Argyle, Bradford City, and most recently with Bury.

Eckersley played for Toronto FC’s Director of Player Development, Paul Mariner at Plymouth Argyle when Mariner served as the club’s manager.
