¦The Red-and-White came out firing, and got their first lead of the season when Jorge Flores won a ball at the top of the box and played it toward the
penalty spot. Moreno, who was serving as captain for Chivas USA, got to the ball before the TFC defenders and flicked home for the lead.
¦The team could have then gone up by another goal or two, with the Red-and-White earning several good chances in the opening 25 minutes of the
match. Justin Braun had a pair of headers go wide, while Marcos Mondaini and Jorge Flores were also dangerous.
¦However, it was Toronto who scored next, when Jacob Peterson played a perfect free kick to former Chivas USA striker Alan Gordon, who moved to TFC
in exchange for Nick LaBrocca at the end of preseason, and the forward’s header beat Dan Kennedy to tie the game.
¦The second half was dominated by the Red-and-White, but the best chance came to another ex-Chivas USA striker in Maicon Santos, who missed wide under
pressure from Andrew Boyens after dribbling past Kennedy.
¦Nick LaBrocca, facing his former club, as well as Braun, saw shots from distance saved by Frei, and Boyens also struck one from distance that the
TFC goalkeeper was able to hold.
¦Stefan Frei had a strong game in goal for Toronto FC, as Chivas USA outshot Toronto 12-7, and had six shots on goal in the second half, compared
to Toronto’s one. Frei finished with six saves, while Kennedy had two for Chivas USA.
¦Kennedy, Boyens, and Flores all made their first MLS appearances of 2011, and Moreno was the team’s captain for the first time in his career. Moreno’s
goal was his first for the Red-and-White, and came a week after scoring for Venezuela against Jamaica while on international duty.
¦The team returns to Los Angeles later on Saturday and will practice from Tuesday to Friday at The Home Depot Center before taking on the Columbus Crew
next Saturday at The Home Depot Center at 7:30 p.m. PT.
¦Chivas USA Head Coach Robin Fraser, on tonight’s match: “Without a doubt, I think a point on the road you have to look at and say you’re satisfied
with that. Having said that, we felt like we had enough possession that we could’ve created more chances and we probably could’ve done a little bit
better with some of the chances we had.” More from players and Fraser can be found on cdchivasusa.com.
¦Next home game: Chivas USA hosts the Columbus Crew next Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. For more information, or for tickets
