Toronto FC announced Friday that they have acquired midfielder Tony Tchani, defender Danleigh Borman and a First Round pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft in exchange for Captain Dwayne De Rosario.

“We have acquired two very strong players that I believe will have an immediate and long-term impact at our club. I’d like to thank Dwayne for all his contributions to Toronto FC and wish him well with his new club in New York,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Technical Director Aron Winter. "It is unfortunate to have to trade our captain, but this deal is part of our rebuild process and helps to open cap room for our club.”

Tchani, 21, is a native of Cameroon and is currently in his second season with the Red Bulls after being selected second overall in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. Last season Tchani, a 2010 Generation adidas player, played in 27 matches, starting in 17 of them with one goal and three assists. Tchani won the 2009 NCAA Men’s Division I soccer championship with the University of Virginia.

Borman, 26, is a native of South Africa and is in his fourth season with the Red Bulls. Borman can play in both the midfield and defence, but plays predominately as a left back. Last season, the South African started in 13 of 18 matches, scoring one goal and adding one assist. Borman was called up to the South African U-19 men’s team earlier in his career.

Dwayne De Rosario joined Toronto FC on December 12, 2008 in a trade with Houston Dynamo. De Rosario started in 53 of the 57 games for Toronto FC, scoring 27 goals and adding ten assists. The Scarborough native was the second captain in team history. The veteran is currently in his eleventh season in Major League Soccer.
