Attendance was about 80 for this matinee game. The Lady Lynx had just finished playing an hour before. Although the summer campers had left, their numbers were almost made up by the Fury woman's team who were going to have to wait for the team bus anyway. First half was played in hot and humid weather with overcast while the second half the sun came out in the south right into the Lynx keeper's eyes. The same thing happened in the previous game. Maybe God is a Fury fan!
Good chances were scarce in this game. 15 minutes had the Fury goalie clear the ball off Lynx Leigh Veidman and the ball deflected back off him at 7 yards and was wide left for a goalkick. Fury Steven Kane had two chances at 40 minutes, first when his header from 15 yards caught the goalie off guard but he ran a few steps over and dove to to push the ball wide right. Kane soon had a chip attempt from 12 yards caught by the goalie. Lynx subbed three players at halftime as the last 15 minutes of the first half were almost played entirely in the Lynx end. At 79 minutes Lynx tried a trick freekick with Macca Wilde tapping over a 35 freekick to a rushing Randy Ribeiro who shot a 30 yard blast from the left that the flying goalie pushed wide right. At 89 minutes the Fury almost scored again when a player got around the goalie and passed over to Barancoski but his blast was stopped by a defender at 5 yards.
Brandon Heembrock almost had the shutout for the Fury. I thought I recognized his name from the past. Yes. He was the Lynx goalie for the 2009 season. An internet search he is actually from Ottawa.
Both teams didn't like the refereeing of Alexis Vaughan and the line crew. Offside calls against both teams and cornerkick vs goalkick calls. She started giving out Yellow cards in the second half with Lynx drawing them 5 to 1. It was a very chippy game.
The Lynx record falls to 5-6-0. Only two teams from the division make the playoffs so it looks like Michigan Bucks and Chicago Fire locked up those spots a few games ago. Ottawa Fury don't play in the same division but have home and away games with the Lynx. They are in division that has only five teams so need to play outside to make up games for the league as a whole. This means the Lynx miss playing division rivals Akron Summit Assault altogether. Maybe Ottawa sounds like a natural rival team to draw against but now they miss playing a team with the same number of points as they have and miss visiting the home town of the band DEVO.
