SUBSTITUTE MARTINEZ LEADS YORK REGION SHOOTERS TO 2-1 VICTORY AND FOUR POINTS CLEAR AT THE TOP Wednesday, June 08, 2011 York Region Shooters went four points clear at the top of the First Division standings with a narrow 2-1 victory over St. Catharines Wolves at Club Roma, St. Catharines Wednesday, thanks in large part to a goal in each half by midfielder Nicolas Martinez. A substitute who entered the game following the interval, Martinez scored at 48 minutes when he collected a rebound to beat St. Catharines goalkeeper Claudio Perri. Martinez struck again at 77 minutes with a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar to then enter the net. St. Catharines reduced the lead with a goal by Matthew Waddington who scored when York Region goalkeeper Camilo Benzi failed to reach a corner kick and Waddington found the net – the goal coming in injury time for a 2-1 final score in favour of the visitors. The loss was the first for St. Catharines Wolves, having won the first three games of the season and the result leaves SC Toronto undefeated in the CSL First Division so far this season. The game was the first of several mid-week games scheduled for Club Roma in St. Catharines and will be followed by the visit of Toronto Croatia on Wednesday, June 15.
