ST. CATHARINES WOLVES OPEN SEASON WITH A 2-1 AWAY VICTORY WHILE SHOOTERS DEFEAT LONDON CITY AT HOME Monday, May 16, 2011 A picture goal by St. Catharines Wolves forward Matthew Fontino proved to be the winner when his side defeated Toronto Croatia 2-1 at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, and in one other game played in the Canadian Soccer League Sunday night, York Region Shooters defeated the visiting London City, also 2-1. Tihomir Maletic, the CSL’s top goalscorer last season, opened the scoring for the home side at the 10th minute mark, but St. Catharines Wolves drew level nine minutes later when midfielder Rudy Pikuzinski beat Croatia goalkeeper Sandi Matika for a 1-1 score at the interval. Matika had little chance to stop Fontino’s winner which came at the 56th minute in a chippy game punctuated by yellow cards and warnings from referee Ljubisa Vrljes who ejected two Wolves’ players in injury time – Matthew Waddington following a second caution and Stefan Kamendy for Violent Conduct. Midfielder Desmond Humphrey opened the scoring for York Region Shooters at the 12th minute mark for a 1-0 lead at halftime at the St. Joan of Arc ground in Maple, and the home side jumped to a 2-0 lead with a goal by forward Kadian Lecky at 69 minutes when he took the ball within three yards of London City goalkeeper Scott Mueller before finding the net. London’s Thomas Beattie reduced the York Region lead to 2-1 late in the game following a fumble by the Shooters ‘keeper Camilo Benzi and the score held for the home win at the final whistle. There were two games postponed Sunday due to ground conditions, the North York Astros vs. TFC Academy scheduled for Esther Shiner Stadium and the weather played a part in the Brantford Galaxy vs. Serbian White Eagles game being called off at Lions Park in Brantford.
