TORONTO LYNX ON THE PROWL AT BARRIE SPIRITFEST

TUESDAY JUNE 9, 2009(TORONTO, CANADA) The Toronto Lynx men's PDL team claimed their first win of the 2009 season on Saturday, downing the visiting Cincinnati Kings 2-1 in the special feature game at the Barrie Spiritfest tournament at Barrie Community Sports Complex. The annual event was contested at multiple facilities throughout the Barrie area over the past weekend. As part of their ongoing commitment to take the highest level of amateur soccer into the soccer community, the Toronto Lynx made their first visit to Barrie, and gained three valuable points in the Great Lakes Division standings in front of a crowd representing many clubs from across the region that were participating in the tournament.

Jordan Web hit his second goal in two games scoring a powerful header inside the far post midway through the first half to put the Lynx up 1-0 early. The team’s continued strong attacking play was rewarded again just before the break when Sergio De Luca struck a left foot drive into the net off the far post for a 2-0 lead. Lynx’ keeper Nils Binstock made an outstanding full stretch reaction save seconds later to preserve the lead at going into the break.

Toronto continued to press their advantage when play resumed, and Dane Roberts earned the Lynx a penalty kick at the midpoint of the second frame. Unfortunately, Daniel Revivo saw his spot kick saved to keep the game alive for the Kings. Their perseverance paid off when they were awarded a penalty kick of their own in the dying moments of the match. Judson McKinney converted the penalty with a well placed into the corner to cut the Lynx’ lead in half and give Cincinnati something to play for in the last few minutes. The well organized Lynx defence managed to close out the game and earn Toronto their first victory of the new season.

JUNIOR LYNX WIN MAJOR SILVERWARE AT SPIRITFEST

The Lynx Junior teams also joined in on the winning theme in Barrie this past weekend at the Barrie Spiritfest tournament. The Toronto Lynx Juniors claimed an undefeated weekend by winning the Under 16 and Under 17 Boys competitions, along with the Under 18 Girls Division. "This was a great opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Super Y-League season kick off next weekend," stated club head coach and Academy Director, Duncan Wilde. "We had lots of families and friends take advantage of seeing us play in an Ontario-based event, a rare treat as we are mainly playing across the border in the USA. Our teams were very good value this weekend and never dropped a single game throughout. Our hard work and preparations paid off very well, resulting in three championship wins in this our second visit to the excellent Barrie Spiritfest tournament".

The Junior Lynx continue their ongoing search for players and parents interested in the club’s College Showcase opportunities, and invite parents to connect with the Wilde at dwilde@lynxsoccer.com for further information.
