Clare Rustad Named W-League Player of the Week
WEDNESDAY JUNE 24, 2009(TORONTO, CANADA) The United Soccer Leagues announced today that Toronto Lady Lynx defender Clare Rustad has been named W-League Player of the Week for the seventh week of the season on the strength of her play and leadership in the team’s 1-1 draw against the Buffalo Flash on Sunday afternoon at Centennial Park Stadium.
The Canadian Women’s National Team veteran led the way as the Lady Lynx came within minutes of sweeping the season series from the tough newcomers to the Great Lakes Division. Rustad put the Lady Lynx ahead in the 71st minute when she headed home Bryanna McCarthy’s corner kick for a 1-nil lead, and served as the anchor of a tough Toronto defense that kept the high-powered lash offense off the scoreboard until the final minute of the match.
Rustad is the first Lady Lynx player to earn Player of the Week honours this season, and the fourth Lady Lynx player to appear on the W-League “Team of the Week”, joining previous honourees Victoria Frederick (Week 2), Alyscha Mottershead (Week 4) and Bryanna McCarthy (Week 6).
The Lady Lynx currently sit in fourth place in the Great Lakes Division with a 3-2-3 (12 points) record at the midpoint of the season, and are in the midst of a nine-day break from action. The team returns to the pitch next Wednesday when they head east to Laval for a Canada Day encounter at 4:00 PM against the Comets, and then travel to Hamilton on Monday July 6 at 7:00 for a make-up match against the Lady Avalanche following last Wednesday’s postponement. The team then returns home on July 8 at 11:00 AM for a Youth Day rematch against Laval.
