Come-from-behind 2-1 win over Hamilton

Date: July 16, 2009

Venue: Hershey Centre, Mississauga ON

Final Score: Toronto 2 (1) Hamilton 1 (1)

Match Summary:

The Toronto Lady Lynx fought back from an early hole to score a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the Hamilton Lady Avalanche on a picture-perfect evening at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. Stefania Morra and Nathalie Urbas tallied to bring the Lady Lynx back from a 1-0 first-half deficit and give the Lady Lynx the victory in their penultimate game in the 2009 regular season. Toronto’s record improves to 5-4-4 (19 points) on the season, while Hamilton falls to 2-9-2 (8 points) on the season. The Lady Lynx win the season series between the two rivals, with a tie and a win in their two meetings.

Hamilton opened the match with a light breeze at their back and the setting sun directly in the face of the Lady Lynx, and took full advantage, taking the game to their hosts early. Their hard work was rewarded ten minutes into the game when Heather MacDougall volleyed an Alison Heydorn cross into the netting past Justine Bernier for a quick 1-0 Lady Avalanche lead.

Toronto rebounded from the early Hamilton pressure, and levelled the match in the 33rd minute. Courtney Clarke inbounded the ball deep in Lady Avalanche territory directly to Morra, who blasted a right footer past a diving Amy Holt into the far corner of the Hamilton net. Morra’s third of the year evened the match at one-all, where the score would remain going into the intermission.

The two teams battled fiercely for the go-ahead goal following the break, with neither team giving quarter as the second half progressed. Toronto finally broke through to break the tie in the 63rd minute when Urbas scored her first in a Lady Lynx uniform. The ball was played back to Holt in the Hamilton net, but the keeper could not beat Urbas to the ball, and the Toronto forward headed it over Holt into the goal to put Toronto atop 2-1. Hamilton could not equalize in the remainder of the match, and Toronto held on for the 3 points.

The Lady Lynx wrap up their 2009 season this coming Saturday when the Quebec City Amiral make their first-ever visit for a 5:00 PM encounter at the Hershey Centre.
