OLYMPIAN SET TO LEAD LADY LYNX IN 2009

WEDNESDAY MAY 13, 2009(TORONTO, CANADA) The Toronto Lady Lynx kick off their 2009 W-League season with two matches this week, and will look to a 2008 Beijing Olympics star to lead them to their fifth consecutive playoff berth. Defender Clare Rustad joins a stellar Lady Lynx roster which will vie for the Great Lakes Division crown against annual rivals Ottawa, Hamilton, London, Rochester and Laval, and newcomers in Buffalo and Quebec City. Toronto kicks off their campaign with their annual School Day match-up tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM at Varsity Centre in a pre-season clash against the London Gryphons before heading across Lake Ontario for their regular season opener on Saturday evening, May 16 at 7:00 PM against the newly-rebranded Rochester Ravens.

National team veteran Rustad comes to Toronto after a number of seasons with the Vancouver Whitecaps, and will join fellow national team defender Lexi Marton (Aurora) to form a formidable central defense. Fan favourite ‘keeper and 2006 W-League Goalkeeper of the Year Justine Bernier (Oakville) joins Marton in returning from a one-season sabbatical in Vancouver with the Whitecaps and the National U-20 squad. 2007 U-19 W-League Player of the Year and Lady Lynx MVP Adrienne Ruhe Lischke (Kitchener) returns to the fold in 2009 as well, after spending the 2008 season in Ottawa with the Fury. Coach Danny Stewart will look to these experienced veterans to provide solid leadership for his young squad.

The Lady Lynx return a solid core of players from their record-setting 2008 squad, including midfielder and National U20 player Allysha Chapman (Courtice) ; U17 National Team players Alyscha Mottershead (M, Brampton) and Kayla Afonso (D, Toronto); midfielder Hayley MacDonald (St. Catharines); forwards Oni Bernard (Toronto) and Tessa Dimitrakopoulos (Richmond Hill) and goalkeeper Aurelea Gumiela (Mississauga).

National U17 Captain Bryana McCarthy (F, Ajax) leads an impressive cast of newcomers with the Lady Lynx, which includes fellow U17 teammates Tiffany Cameron (F, Mississauga) and Caroline Szwed (M, Oakville); forwards Giselle Mangal (Mississauga), Nicole O’Donnell (Winnipeg) and Victoria Frederick (Huntsville, Alabama); and defender Jamie Schroter (Mississauga). Veteran W-League defender Erica Henderson comes to the Lady Lynx from Rochester to provide even more leadership and depth at the back for Toronto.
