Match Summary:
For the second time in three seasons, the Toronto Lady Lynx opened their W-League regular season with a first-minute goal in Rochester, and scored a 4-0 victory over their hosts. Canadian National U17 captain Bryana McCarthy found the net 30 seconds into the match, and Toronto never looked back to secure their fifth consecutive season-opening victory. Justine Bernier earned the shutout in her return to the Lady Lynx after one season in Vancouver with the Whitecaps. Toronto (1-0-0) climbs to the top of the Great Lakes Division with the victory.
The Lady Lynx continued their strong play after the rookie’s marker, and controlled the play throughout the first half. Fellow newcomer Victoria Frederick tallied two goals to put Toronto up 3-0 going into the break.
The University of Alabama forward earned the hat trick in her W-League debut early in the second half, and the Lady Lynx cruised to the clean sheet victory over the Ravens. Alyscha Mottershead, Clare Rustad, Lexi Marton and Allysha Chapman formed a formidable back four to assist Bernier in her shutout effort. The Lady Lynx improve to 5-0-0 all-time in season openers.
The Lady Lynx return to Toronto for their home opener next Saturday evening, May 23, at 7:30 PM at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan to tangle with the London Gryphons.
