Match Summary:
The Toronto Lady Lynx kicked off their 2009 W-League campaign with a 1-0 preseason victory over the visiting London Gryphons in front of a large School Day crowd at Varsity Centre in downtown Toronto this afternoon. Rookie Tiffany Cameron scored in her Lady Lynx debut to give Toronto the win in their one and only tune-up match prior to their regular season opener on Saturday evening in Rochester. Keepers Justine Bernier and Aurelea Gumiela split the shut-out in between the posts for the Lady Lynx.
The first half was an even affair played on a wet field with steady drizzle throughout the frame. Neither team was able to break through and find the scoresheet and the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
The sun broke through the clouds as the teams took the pitch to start the second half, and Toronto saw their fortunes change in the ensuing sunshine. In the 60th minute, newcomer Victoria Frederick broke on a long run down the far side of the field, and fed a brilliant cross into the box to Cameron, who headed the ball home to give the Lady Lynx the lead. The Gryphons rattled a shot off the post five minutes later, but were unable to crack a strong Toronto defense led by Olympian Clare Rustad in her Lady Lynx debut. Toronto controlled the play throughout the remainder of the game, and claimed their first victory of the year.
The Lady Lynx now head to Rochester to battle the newly-rebranded Ravens on Saturday evening at 7:00 PM at Rochester Rhinos Stadium in their regular-season opener. Toronto then returns home for their home opener next Saturday evening at 7:30 PM at the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan for a re-match with the Gryphons.
