September 16, 2009 CSL summary of Wednesday games (from CSL media release)

ST. CATHARINES WOLVES DEFEAT BRAMPTON 1-0 WHILE SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES HELD TO SCORELESS TIE BY ITALIA SHOOTERS......final regular season games this weekend
2009-09-17

St. Catharines Wolves won their fifth game of the rapidly closing CSL regular season with a 1-0 home victory over Brampton Lions, while in one other game Wednesday night, Serbian White Eagles were kept in check by a lively Italia Shooters for a scoreless tie at Centennial Stadium.

With each team left with one game remaining in the regular season, there is little to draw from Wednesday’s results to determine positions in the overall standings. It’s the final positions that decide the match-ups for the first round (quarter-finals) to kickoff the weekend beginning Friday, September 25.

Any one of the present top three can win the overall standings at the weekend and whatever the outcome, all three have earned the opportunity to decide to play home or away in the first game of a 2-leg quarter-finals. The second game would be reversed.

Italia Shooters is the most likely team to take the fourth position to join the top three in the top seeded foursome. To be knocked out of the fourth spot, Italia Shooters must lose or tie St. Catharines Wolves on Sunday while Brampton Lions defeat Trois-Rivieres Attak -- this scenario would give the Lions the desired fourth place. A St. Catharines win to give Italia Shooters and the Wolves 25 points apiece, would not be enough to overhaul the York Region team due to their superior most wins advantage – they presently have seven wins while the Niagara Peninsula team would have five.

Midfielder Stefan Kamendy won the game for St. Catharines Wolves after entering the game as a substitute at 58 minutes and finding the net past Brampton ‘ keeper Kevin Doyle ten minutes later.

Brampton Lions were down to 10 men at that point of the second half when Niko Poku received two yellow cards in the span of two minutes.

St. Catharines and Italia Shooters play their last regular season game at Maple on Sunday, that’s a 5 pm kickoff, while Brampton travel to Quebec to take on the Attak, a 4 pm kickoff on Saturday.

Italia Shooters had an edge most of the time but failed to score in a goal-less draw against Serbian White Eagles at Centennial Stadium.

Serbia lost defender Thierry Mangwa when he was ordered off late in that game.

Serbian White Eagles host Toronto Croatia at Lamport Stadium on Sunday, a game that will decide the International Division title. It’s an 8 pm kickoff.
