DEFEAT ELIMINATES ASTROS FROM PLAYOFFS GIVING FOUR REMAINING TEAMS PLAYOFF BERTHS......Attak wins again - a weekend double.... London City crash 7-1 to TFC Academy
2009-09-13

All eight teams have now qualified for the CSL playoffs following wins by Trois-Rivieres Attak (2-1 over Serbian White Eagles). TFC Academy (7-1 over London City) and Italia Shooters (2-1 over North York Astros) on Sunday.

The failure of North York Astros to pick-up a crucial one point to stay alive removed the uncertainty. The Astros were eliminated on a winning goal by Italia Shooters in the last few minutes at Maple, so this 2-1 result together with the resounding 7-1 victory by TFC Academy over London City, put the academy team in a position of being out of reach.

Portugal FC and St. Catharines Wolves also picked up playoff berths as a result of the North York loss and Italia Shooters were already in a favourable position to qualify and did so with the 2-1 victory.

The eight qualifying teams are: Trois-Rivieres Attak, Toronto Croatia, Serbian White Eagles, Brampton Lions, Italia Shooters, TFC Academy, Portugal FC and St. Catharines Wolves.

The top four of these eight teams in the overall standings will be favoured to select their home and away venues in a 2-leg quarter-final series. This also applies to the semi-finals with any of the original top seeded four teams advancing to the semi-finals, they will again have first choice of the home and away venues. The CSL championship is a one-game final.

Kadian Lecky opened the scoring for Italia Shooters in the game against North York Astros, he scored on a penalty kick after being tripped in the box by Astros’ defender Alexandre Oran. The goal came at the 9th minute and it was Lecky’s tenth goal of the campaign.

Following a 1-0 at half-time, the Astros’ Diego Maradona tied the game 1-1 at the 58th minute and it was at 84 minutes that Nick Cisternino struck the important winner for Italia Shooters, a 2-1 final score.

Pierre-Rudolph Mayard opened the scoring at 54 minutes for Trois-Rivieres Attak and Guillaume Héroux made it 2-0 at the 68th minute mark.

Shane Lammie scored for Serbian White Eagles at 82 minutes, but it was not enough to prevent the 2-1 back-to-back win for the Quebec team, having defeated Toronto Croatia 4-1 on Saturday. The wins moved Trois-Rivieres to the top of the overall standings by virtue of a superior tie-breaker while tied on points with Toronto Croatia.

Forward Allando Matheson opened the scoring for TFC Academy in the game with London City at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium. He scored at the 15th minute, but Justin Marques tied the score for London City two minutes later.

Matheson scored his second goal for a 2-1 TFC lead at 24 minutes, forward Justin Maheu increased the lead to 3-1 at 42 minutes and Maheu scored again just before the interval, a 4-1 TFC Academy lead at half-time.

TFC defender Ashton Morgan made it 5-1 at 66 minutes, midfielder Nicholas Lindsay scored to make it 6-1 at 77 minutes and midfielder Matt Stinson completed the rout for a 7-1 score at the 88th minute mark.

The win moves TFC Academy to third place in the National Division and sixth in the overall standings.

The CSL moves into the final week of the regular season, with games on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday before the playoffs begin with the quarter-finals the following weekend, September 25 – 27.
