ST. CATHARINES WOLVES WIN BIG IN FIGHT FOR PLAYOFF SPOT....DEFEAT SERBIAN WHITE EAGLES AT HOME.......Astros pick up a point in scoreless tie with Toronto Croatia and are still alive
2009-09-09

St. Catharines Wolves’ playoff hopes got a shot in the arm with a 1-0 home victory over Serbian White Eagles at Club Roma Wednesday night, while in a second CSL game North York Astros were not so fortunate at Centennial Stadium when held to a scoreless tie with Toronto Croatia.

All four teams had plenty to play for, with International Division leaders Toronto Croatia attempting to open a gap with defending CSL champions Serbian White Eagles, they have a game in hand in second place. The Astros and St. Catharines have an entirely different agenda with both teams caught in a dog fight with Italia Shooters, TFC Academy and Portugal FC, all bidding for the four remaining playoff spots.

Only St. Catharines Wolves are celebrating, however, scooping up three big points for a 4-5-7 WLT record for 19 points with two games remaining, against Brampton Lions on September 16 and Italia Shooters on the final day of the regular season, September 20.

The Astros are still alive with a 4-9-3 for record for 15 points following Wednesday’s tie and they have two games remaining, a visit to Italia Shooters on September 13 and a home game with the energetic TFC Academy on September 19.

Carlo Arghittu scored the lone goal for St. Catharines Wolves at the 76th minute mark, he took a pass from forward Joe DelPriore to drive the ball from 15 yards just inside the post and out of reach of Serbia goalkeeper Dan Pelc.

There were some close calls at both ends, with Serbian White Eagles striking the crossbar, but the game ended1-0 for the home side.

Both Toronto Croatia and North York Astros had numerous opportunities to score throught the game at Centennial Stadium, Halburto Harris near the end in added time and Hayden Fitzwillams both striking the woodwork for Toronto Croatia and Zakariae Mahrady coming closest for North York Astros.

Astros’ goalkeeper Euloge Awitor was outstanding.

Toronto Croatia have an improved 10-1-5 record for 35 points and lead Serbian White Eagles in the International Division by 3 points. Toronto Croatia has two games remaining, Serbian White Eagles have three. These teams meet on September 20.
