CROATIA LEAD INTERNATIONAL DIVISION FOLLOWING 2-0 VICTORY OVER STRUGGLING LONDON CITY...........Maletic goal seals the win
2009-08-30

Toronto Croatia jumped back in the top position in the International Division with a 2-0 victory over London City at Centennial Stadium Sunday night, a result that all but eliminated the southwestern Ontario team from the CSL playoffs which begin late September.

The two teams are positioned at the extreme ends of the overall standings which gave the London team only a slim chance of victory against a strong Croatia side that until a surprising 1-0 loss to Portugal FC on August 23 were unbeaten in 12 games during the current campaign.

But London City stood up well to Croatia through to a scoreless first half and into the second half when an own goal gave the International Division leaders a 1-0 goal lead.

London defender Travis Gordon was credited with putting the ball into his own net at the 57th minute mark and just six minutes later forward Tihomir Maletic made it 2-0 for Toronto Croatia after cutting in from the left wing to find the net.

Any opportunity London City had of getting back into the game was almost eliminated when midfielder Erik Elmauer was sent off by referee John Facchini at 75 minutes after being issued a second yellow card and the game ended 2-0 in favour of Croatia.

Toronto Croatia improve to a 9-1-4 WLT record for 31 points for top position as a result of the win, while London City remain in the bottom position of the National Division with a 1-11-2 record for five points.
