Portugal FC player-coach Danny Amaral rescued his team from a 2-0 deficit to score twice late in the second half for a 2-2 final score in the game with TFC Academy at Downsview Park Sunday.

Near the end of a well-played first half TFC Academy took the lead on a goal by midfielder Josh Janniere at the 42nd. minute mark and just three minutes later midfielder James Stamopolous made it 2-0. The second goal came from a rebound after Portugal FC goalkeeper Adrian Ibanez made the save for Stamopolous to tap in.

A penalty was awarded to TFC Academy by referee Mike Lambert at the 65th minute mark following a hand ball in the box by Portugal midfielder Taylor Lord. Substitute goalkeeper Michael Silva, who came into the game at half-time on a switch with Ibanez, made the save from the penalty attempt by TFC Academy’s Stamopolous.

The game became physical into the second half and two players, Allando Matheson of TFC Academy and Portugal midfielder Giovanni Annisi were shown the red card following an altercation at the 70th minute mark.

Amaral scored the first of his two goals from the game’s second penalty following an untidy challenge in the penalty box by TFC Academy centre-back Daniel Di Biagio. The challenge caused referee Mike Lambert to eject the TFC Academy defender and point to the spot for the second time in the game and Amaral found the net past TFC goalkeeper Soitiri Varlokostas,

Amaral scored the tying goal at 86 minutes after pouncing on the ball following a scramble in the Academy goalmouth and the Portugal player-coach found the net with a hard shot, leaving Varlokostas with no chance.

TFC Academy improve to 3-3-4 WLT record for 13 points, tied for second place with St. Catharines Wolves in the National Division, while Portugal FC are at 2-2-6 for 12 points and fourth place in the International Division.
