Attendance was about 500 on this warm day with a bright sun in the south west. Although both teams play their home games this season at Centennial Stadium, this game was scheduled at Lamport Stadium because it’s the only moderate sized Toronto area stadium with stands on opposite sides of the field to separate the rival fans.
There looked like there were more Croatia fans at today’s game as they were designated the ‘home’ team.
Both teams had plenty of chances to score today. Two chances where the White Eagles put the ball in the net were called back. At 53 minutes TC Hugo Herrera was injured at the TC 20 yard line but SWE players continued up the field and eventually ‘scored’ on a chip over the goalie but referee Justin Tasev was 80 yards up the field looking at the injured player get treatment. At 89 minutes, SWE Kiril Dimitrov knocked a ball into the net from 3 yards but the offside flag was up. A SWE player was given the final Yellow card of the game for harassing the referee’s assistant who raised the flag. Just a minute earlier TC Johnny Bustamante received a Yellow card at the center line for knocking over SWE Carlos Zeballos although both had only come onto the field a minute earlier. I counted seven Yellow cards. The other two SWE cards were for kicking the ball out of bounds after having play whistled down. One of the TC cards was for taking too long in taking a freekick deep in their own end. It wasn’t really a rough game.
Sandi Matika earned the shutout for Croatia. He had to make some key saves and his defence limited the number of rebounds. Dan Pelc of White Eagles was just as sharp. Both goalies palmed the ball over the net a few times on hard shots.
White Eagles made three subs at 69 minutes to put fresh legs on the field and apply more pressure which they did but Croatia looked for the counterattack opportunities and it opened up the game even more. The CSL league rules allow up to seven subs in a game.
My deciding to set one long 90 minute half with a count-up clock turned out to be a great idea for keeping track of time (this is the usual method of regular announcer Ennio who couldn’t be here. Dave Rumack was the PA announcer). I was laughing at the multi million dollar scoreboard at BMO Field a few hours later having the clock stop dead at 15:00 minutes and the graphics for # 14 of Dwayne DeRosario showing the name of # 3 Nana Attakora during the introductions and also taking a full two minutes to announce the Red Bulls goal despite all the video replays available to them.
