TFC ACADEMY SNATCH VICTORY WITH LATE RALLY OVER NORTH YORK ASTROS

TFC Academy staged a late rally to surprise a leading North York Astros 2-1 at Esther Shiner Stadium, the only game played in the Canadian Soccer League Saturday.

North York midfielder Diego Benzi scored the game’s opening goal, a well-struck drive from 25 yards that caught the right lower corner of the net away from a well-beaten TFC ‘keeper Soitiri Varlokostas.

This goal held up until TFC Academy striker Andre Verdugo scored the equalizer at the 86th minute mark.

The game appeared heading for a draw when the Academy midfielder James Stamopoulos moved the ball into the net out of reach of Astros’ goalkeeper Arthur Zaslavski in a goalmouth scramble.

TFC Academy, which leads the National Division with a 2-0-2 WLT record for eight points following Saturday’s win, returns to action on June 19, a game against Serbian White Eagles at Centennial Stadium, an 8 pm start, while the Astros are at home the next day, Saturday, June 20, a home encounter with Portugal FC at 3 in the afternoon.

There is one remaining game this weekend when Toronto Croatia hosts Brampton Lions at Centennial Stadium on Sunday night, an 8.15 kickoff.
