ST. CATHARINES WOLVES WIN HOME OPENER OVER ASTROS
2009-06-03

A goal in each half gave St. Catharines Wolves a 2-0 victory over North York Astros in the home opener at Club Roma, the only game in the Canadian Soccer League Wednesday night.

Following a number of end-to-end exchanges, St. Catharines went ahead at 11 minutes from a goal by midfielder Calvin Rosario which caught an Astros’ defender before finding the net out of reach of North York goalkeeper Arthur Zaslavski.

North York pressed for an equalizer but the half ended 1-0 and it was St. Catharines who eventually scored following the interval to make it 2-0 at the 59th minute mark, a goal by midfielder Joe Delpriore.

It was the Niagara Peninsula team’s first win of the season following a scoreless tie against Portugal on May 30 and it was the first game for the Astros following a postponed opener at London on May 29.

North York will take on TFC Academy at Esther Shiner this coming Saturday, June 6 at 3 pm, while St. Catharines Wolves visit London for a game with the City at Cove Road on June 12, an 8.30 pm kickoff.
