Portugal FC, St. Catharines Wolves battle to scoreless tie

2009-05-30

Portugal FC and St. Catharines Wolves fought to a scoreless tie at Lamport Stadium in Toronto’s west end, the only game scheduled in the CSL Saturday.

It was the season opener for the Garden City team, while Portugal FC were playing their second game of the season following a 2-2 with Serbian White Eagles in their opener on May 22.

Portugal pressed early but were unable to find the net in what turned out to be an even first half. St. Catharines came close to scoring at the 54th minute mark when Tony Mermigas struck the post with Portugal FC ‘keeper Mike Silva well beaten.

Portugal’s Selmir Sehic came close to scoring for the home side at 86 minutes when he stepped around St. Catharines’ goalkeeper Claudio Perri only to catch the post from close range. The game ended 0-0.

St. Catharines have their home opener next Wednesday, they host North York Astros at Club Roma, while Portugal travels to London for a game with London City on Friday, June 5 – that team’s first home game, to be played at Cove Road.
