Attendance was announced as 19657 on this rainy afternoon. The rain started just after the 13 minute mark and gradually got harder throughout the game without a break. I especially had trouble keeping notes in the second half. More fans than ever were late for this game before starting time. I'd estimate just under 10% of the seats were not filled (although probably paid for) by fans staying home to keep dry. This was the residue from Hurricane Ike which pounded the southern US states.
The regulars who had been away on national team duty for their countries were back in the line up today playing the team with the best record in the league. New for us were we finally saw Carlos Ruiz in a home game. I didn't think he played hard enough just waiting for the ball to come to him and being disposessed too easily. Brought in on a trade earlier this week was Hunter Freeman who played on the wing and looked good. He came here in a trade with New York Red Bulls for draft choices but will only be here until the end of the season as he's going to try out in Europe. Fans had been led to believe that Carl Robinson wouldn't play this week after this exhausting return from playing for Wales in Russia and the long detoured flight back to Toronto but he ended up scoring Toronto's goal. Only notable absence was defender Marco Velez serving a suspension for earning a Red card in last week's game.
The Carlsberg Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was awarded to defender Julius James. Since so often it goes to Carl Robinson for reasons that aren't clear to me, I thought he'd definately win it this week.
The Crew won the inaugural Trillium Cup in games held between the two teams this season with a record of one win and two ties in their three games played. There was a trophy presentation after the game and the players came over to the east stands to salute their travelling fans. The Crew currently has the best record in the MLS.
Toronto FC needed to win this game but after this weekend are now six points out of the final playoff spot with games running out. They only have two more home games and four on the road and this team does not have a good travelling record.
