The game collapsed for Toronto in the 77th minute with the first Red card. I could see blood on Dal Richetti's uniform when he went to the sideline for treatment (with the aid of my binoculars). I had seen him go down in the box but it was the sharp eyes of the referee that caught the punch. A discussion with the referee's assistant just seemed to be about where the punch took place--whether it was inside or outside the box that resulted in the Penalty kick rather than a freekick.
Velez's Red card was dumb as he wasn't even the guy knocked over and he was on a Yellow card already so why argue a call that didn't involve you?
Jeff Cunningham drew a lot of boos from Toronto fans when he was introduced. No booing of the American anthem today as the fans knew the Canadian anthem would be played right after--unlike the uncertainty when the MLS All Star game was played here last month.
Toronto FC finally loses a home game in a regular season league game. They've lost International Friendlies and Canada Cup games that were ignored by the casual and serious sports media but finally there's no hiding that the streak is over which stretches back to last year. Well time to start building again!
Fans were held back from entering the gates until less than half hour before the kickoff. A small disclaimer on the gate said they were filming for a movie but that didn't seem to be a good reason. The door prize today was a Gatorade hand towel. I counted only 13 team logos plus the MLS logo in the 14 team league. Was San Jose missing? Nope they were here. Aha. It was New York Red Bulls (named after the energy drink) who I suspect must be made by a rival company of the Gatorade sports drink. Something like this happened in the US when McDonalds had to leave the Saudi Arabian flag logo off their drinks in the World Cup because it was considered sacrilige to 'throw-away' their flag as a disposible cup.
