Attendance was announced as 20107. This game took a long time to sell out as I heard announcements for months about tickets being available for this game. Last year the team promised to limit the early starts of mid week games but I suppose the promise of television time on CBC got them to put this game on early. It took well until the game to fill my section and a lot of people I'd never seen before were here. Fans were given Lowe's inflatable bats to clap together to make a drum sound.
There was no video of the player intros so the announcements had to read out the whole name of the TFC players.
Toronto FC had to win this game to win as the best team in Canada and move on to play Real Estell of Nicaragua in the COMCACAF Club Championships. The Impact needed only a tie. TFC got most of the referee's calls tonight and had numerous freekicks to go for the win.
Impact goalie Matt Jordan was given the George Gross Award as the series MVP which also included the USL Vancouver Whitecaps. The Impact won both games against that team by 2-0 scores while TFC had a loss and a tie. TFC had beaten the Impact 1-0 in the first game in the series. George Gross was the long time sports reporter for the Toronto Telegram and Toronto Sun newspapers. The award was presented by his son George Gross Jr. The Impact were presented with team medals for winning and the Voyageurs Cup for which they've won all seven times it's been awarded. The early years had the competition include the Toronto Lynx when they fielded a USL team.
TFC fans showed their usual poor sportsmenship during the presentation by yelling and swearing but they were 50 yards from the awards table. Impact players and staff went over to the visitors section and saluted their travelling supporters of a few hundred. The Impact supporters were kept in their section although they did run up to the front to near the field while the TFC fans went home. I recognized the Impact assistant coach as Marc Dos Santos who I've seen about five times this year as head coach of the Impact farm team of Trois-Rivieres Attak who play in the Canadian Soccer League.
Many Toronto fans thought that TFC should just be gifted the Canadian spot into the CONCACAF club championships but this result should set this competition for years to come as a test for the best club. The American teams hold a national cup championship each year and USL teams often upset MLS teams.
TFC knew this was a big game. The excuse for putting their reserve team in against their two international friendlies so the players could 'rest up' for this big game and real MLS game. I'd like to see now that this tournament has been established, that the team drop the internationals and make the two home games between Montreal and Vancouver part of the ticket package. That means the coach doesn't have to beg people to buy tickets. Embarassing that the always sold out BMO Field was hard-selling tickets for these games.
