Toronto FC couldn't score in this game and frustrated the fans. They earned a rather weak penalty kick called and Earthquakes Joe Cannon saved the shot from Amato Guevara who supposedly hasn't missed a spot kick since he was a child. Guevara was slow to follow up as the ball came back towards him but defender James Riley kicked the ball over the net to prevent another shot over the fallen goalie. TFC fans have been sold the story that 16 year old forward Abdus Ibrahim wouldn't be playing full games so he wouldn't burn out...but there he was playing the full 96 minutes as TFC felt they had no one better to bring on. TFC only made one substitution the whole game and that was when forward Jeff Cunningham came on for midfielder Tyler Rosenlund finally giving TFC two strikers. Most of the afternoon, Ibrahim was playing upfield all by himself. Boos started to rain down near the end of the game. A part of me rooted for Earthquakes to keep the tie after TFC missed the penalty kick.
Earthquakes are an expansion team this year with their roster. The team that used to play in San Jose moved to Houston leaving no team in that city. Former Canadian national team coach Frank Yallop had coached the old Earthquakes team. He has said that he was going to build the new team from the goaltender outward. The team plays very well defensively but is the lowest scoring team in the league--only 11 goals in 16 games.
Joe Cannon and Greg Sutton earned shutouts for their teams. The Man of the Match (who is always a TFC player) was named as Carl Robinson.
It was announced during the game that the Danone Cup special 20 minute game between the best 12 year old kids from the East and West of Canada would play as soon as this game ended. After the game, hundreds of kids with their parents came onto the field to take penalty shots on Tony the Tiger (a breakfast cereal mascot). I waited around 45 minutes but the line hadn't gotten much shorter. The game officials stayed so it would be a long day for them. I couldn't see the staff clearing the field until the last kid had left so I left.
Toronto FC next game is a home game in the Canadian championship earn a spot in the CONCACAF club championship. They need a win against the USL Montreal Impact.
