Toronto FC coach John Carver talked with the media after training on Wednesday following Pat Phelan's trade to New England Revolution, with the Reds acquiring an international slot.

"The squad has got better and stronger and unfortunately for Pat it's been a tough time," said Carver. "I have to take some of the blame because he's a centre back and he's not had much opportunity to play there. He has played most of the games as a right back or holding midfielder. Because of the strength of the squad, it was difficult for Pat to break in as a centre half. We looked at the situation and there was an opportunity for him to go back home and he might get some playing time there."

"He was fantastic. He was a great pro, and I feel for him, but it's an opportunity for him and he understands the situation and I wish him all the very best," Carver added.

With Phelan's departure, New Zealand forward Jarrod Smith has moved up to the international roster. "Jarrod deserves that because he's played very well this season. He's a real gem. We keep on working to bring in new players and looking at different options. The window opens pretty soon and hopefully we'll be active in the window."

Danny Dichio missed Saturday's win against LA Galaxy with injury but Carver is happy with the striker's progress. "Danny is coming along nicely. He's not as sore as he was. I had to give him a break and that's done him the world of good. It wasn't a big issue, but he had played a lot of games in a short space of time. He's made a big improvement and hopefully he'll be available for the weekend."
